Backgammon – 3 Basic Plans

[ English | Deutsch | Español | Français | Italiano ]

In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 main plans employed. You must be agile enough to hop between strategies almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to achieve, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is now in serious difficulty since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be played when you are decidedly behind as this action much improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchors are towards your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for an powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have anyother additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a excellent idea to try and get your challengerto hit them in this case!
