Backgammon – Three Main Plans

[ English ]

In very simple terms, there are three chief tactics used. You want to be able to hop between tactics almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you might manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in big-time calamity taking into account that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position filled by at least two of your checkers.) It would be used when you are decidedly behind as this action greatly improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is important for an effective backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is getting their checkers home, because you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
