Backgammon – 3 Main Schemes

In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 chief game plans employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is now in big-time trouble since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be used when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have other additional pieces to move! In this case, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
