Backgammon – Three General Plans
In very general terms, there are three chief plans employed. You must be agile enough to switch strategies quickly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This involves creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.
The Blitz
This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is now in big-time calamity taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The strongest locations for anchors are towards your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
