In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 chief tactics employed. You want to be agile enough to switch game plans quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time dire straits since they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It should be played when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have other spare checkers to move! In this case, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
