Backgammon – 3 General Techniques
In astonishingly general terms, there are three general strategies employed. You must be agile enough to hop between strategies almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to barricade in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.
The Blitz
This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in serious dire straits seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be employed when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you don’t have other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
